Board of Directors Meeting/Annual Meeting
February 18, 2016
Members Present: Kathy Beumer, Marcia Holliger, Ann Marie Browne, Murray Schemmer, Gary Girton, Eldon Solomon, Pam Ferguson, Ron Ferguson, Mary Jo Shockley, Connie Jennings, Dick Johnson and 8 community/church participants.
Welcome – Kathy Beumer opened the meeting with a welcome to those present and spoke about her Monday nights volunteering at the pantry and her thankfulness for volunteers (no paid staff at all in the pantry), the building (built by volunteers) and the kitchen in its usefulness to educate and serve those at the pantry getting food.
Connie Jennings offered a few remarks about her presence today at the pantry as a volunteer was because others were there for her when she needed help and she gave a reminder that anyone can be in situations of need unexpectedly.She then opened the meeting with a prayer of thankfulness for peace, education and jobs.

Pam Ferguson gave a report about food and service.She passed around a packet of copies (attached as a pdf) listing statistics from 2008 through 2015 and statistics from Second Harvest for Randolph County.
Mary Jo Shockley talked about the volunteers for the pantry and how thankful she is for those who provide weekly time for Walmart pickups, Aldi shoppers, those who help clean the building and those who serve clients.
Treasurer’s Report – Marcia Holliger gave a verbal report listing repeat visits were 1% until 2015 when it increased to 2%.30-40% of those who visit the pantry only used it once in the past year. 70% of those using the pantry are female, 53% do not receive SNAP benefits, 27% of the households are 2 parent households, 45% have high school degrees and 29% have some college studies. She then broke down the contributions to the pantry:41% of funds for the pantry are from individual donations, 29% from churches, 4% from businesses.United Way makes up 13% of the pantry income, FEMA 4%.There have been 109 different cash donors, 65 different food donors.
Kathy Beumer spoke about fund raising for the past year.The Community Foundation allowed the pantry to apply for a $24,500 matching grant where the Foundation would give the pantry a $1 for every $2 raised for air conditioning and a walk-in fridge and freezer.They then increased the amount the pantry could raise by an additional $10,000 and the extra money went to building indebtedness. As of the end of the campaign, the pantry received $39,501.01 from this appeal.In addition, close to $17,000 was raised in December through an annual appeal letter.
Connie Jennings, chairman of the Building Committee gave a report listing the members, clarifying their responsibility to make the building work well for clients and volunteers and community members who use the building for meetings.Things done the past year included:setting up the food shopping area, lobby decoration with curtains and pictures and furniture, completing the kitchen, ordering and placing the sign, helped chose air conditioning and the walk-in refrigeration units, Gary Girton placed information signs in the parking lot and arranged for installation of gutters.The committee is currently working on fencing around outside refrigeration units and the replacement of the neighbor’s fence.
Time was allowed for questions, answers and comments from all present.
